Travel Tryouts Fall 2022
Grades 3-8
Malden Youth Soccer will conduct player evaluations for our Fall ‘22 / Spring ‘23 travel soccer teams. These evaluations will help to determine the teams players will be assigned to for the Fall season. These assignments will likely flow through to the following Spring season.
Travel soccer competes against other towns in the Middlesex Youth Soccer league. The league offers 5 divisions of play, between 1 (most competitive) and 5. It is important for players to be assigned to teams at the proper level to maximize their development, their enjoyment, and the overall experience of teammates. Attending these evaluations is a good experience for players and is essential for being assigned to the correct team.
Grade 3-6 Evaluations
Monday, June 20, 6:00 - 7:30 -- AT DEVIR PARK
You should attend this session if you are entering between grade 3 and 6 next year.
NOTE: Second graders who play with our intown program on Sunday mornings do not need to attend. We evaluated players during these sessions.
Grade 7-8 Evaluations
Wednesday, June 22, 6:00 - 7:30 -- AT MCDONALD STADIUM
All players entering grade 7 & 8 should attend.

Registration and Evaluation FAQ
What will I do during the evaluation sessions?
Sessions will include small-group skill evaluations conducted by a coach, and short-sided scrimmage games separated loosely by skill level.
Am I guaranteed to make a team?
For the most part, yes. There is a team for every level of player. There are few exceptions that sometimes affect our ability to accept players that are most often driven by low enrollment in a particular gender/age group. In these cases, players are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. It is important to register as soon as you are confident in your ability to participate in the fall. We will do everything possible to find a team for players who register before the deadline of July 1.
Can I request the team, level, or coach I am assigned to?
Requests of the player and coach are considered during team assignment, but these are not the only factors. Skill level and characteristics of other players in the league are also important criteria.
Should I attend if I play with MYSA Sunday Mornings at Pine Banks?
If you attended either of the final 2 days of Sunday morning soccer, we have already evaluated you and it is not necessary for you to attend these evaluations. There may be value in attending if you are interested in trying to make a high-division team, or if you would like the experience of a tryout.
What if I cannot attend an evaluation or don’t do well?
These evaluations are only one criteria for identifying placement. If you have a recent history of playing with Malden Youth Soccer, we will work with your coach to understand your skill level. There will also be other opportunities over the summer to be evaluated. Contact us for any questions travel@maldenyouthsoccer.org.
What do I need to bring to the evaluation?
Players should wear shin guards. If you are a new player and have not yet acquired shin guards, you can participate in the initial skill evaluation, but will not be permitted to play in the scrimmage. Players should also bring water and wear soccer cleats, if available.
What is the registration deadline?
Travel registration deadline is July 1. A $15 late fee will be applied after this date. More importantly, we will not guarantee a placement for players who don’t register by the deadline. Once teams are full for a particular skill/gender/age group, registration will be closed. If you need more time and/or financial assistance, please contact registrar@maldenyouthsoccer.org.
