SPRING HIGH SCHOOL AGED TEAMS

Malden Youth Soccer's high-school aged teams provide  a spring-only option for players in high school and one year beyond (Grade 9 through Post Grade +1).

Expect 6 or 7 regular season games starting in Mid April, normally played mostly on Sundays.  Winning teams will be eligible for postseason championship play at the Middlesex and Massachusetts levels.

It is not necessary to pay for your registration at this time.  Registration will be open between November and January, but will be closed when teams are full.

FAQ's

When are Tryouts?

Tryouts for high-school aged teams are conducted in November the prior year, weather permitting.

Tryouts for spring 2024 have completed and teams have been formed.  To inquire about availability, email registrar@maldenyouthsoccer.org.

How are the teams organized?

Teams will be organized based on skill level and playing history.  In the cases where multiple teams are entered into the same cohort (e.g. Boys Grade 9-10 may have 3 or 4 teams), the strongest and most experienced players will be assigned to Team 1, and so on.

When will tryout results be announced?
Players will receive invitations to specific teams by the end of November.  In some cases, players will be assigned to a team as a guarantee AND waitlisted to play on a higher team.  Waitlisted players will be formally offered positions on higher teams if players initially assigned to higher teams do not register on time.   We expect to have all teams finalized by mid-late December.

What is the season practice schedule?

Formal practice schedules will be communicated around February or March and teams will start practicing when weather allows.  Some coaches may begin activities over the winter break.  High school teams normally practice twice a week later in the evening (starting around 7 or 8 pm).

How long is the tryout?
Expect to spend about 1.75 hours at the field during your tryout.

Who will be coaching each team?
Coaching assignments are not final.  We expect most coaches from last spring to return, and some new coaches to join the high-school staff.

When do I need to pay?
You do not need to pay to attend tryouts.  Registration for the spring season is now open (click here).  You will need to pay when you register.  We recommend that you register as soon as you can because we will close registration when teams are full.  If you require financial assistant, contact registrar@maldenyouthsoccer.org ASAP.

I'm in 8th grade, what should I do?

Although the rules allow for 8th graders to play at the high school levels, this is not recommended for most players.  The level of competition at high school age groups is very high, and there are fewer games (~6) than in the normal travel season (~9).  8th graders must be approved to play on high school aged teams, and will be required to meet certain age requirements.  We will not be conducting tryouts for the "normal" grade 7/8 spring teams, and there is no need to attend this tryout session.  If you would like to be considered for a grade 7/8 travel team and have not played on a MYSA team in the past, please contact travel@maldenyouthsoccer.org.

What are the exact age and grade requirements?

  • To play on a Grade 9-10 team, players must be between grade 8 and 10, and must have a birth year within 2007, 2008, or 2009.

  • To play on a grade 11+ team, players must be between grade 9 and 2023 graduate, and must have a birth year of 2004-2009.

Violating these rules would cause teams to be ineligible, so exceptions will not be considered.

Do I need to attend a tryout?

Spring high school aged teams will be formed earlier this season.  Although it is possible to be assigned to a team without attending a tryout, it is highly recommended that you fill out the form above to let us know that you want to play.  We will do our best to assess your skill based on prior history.  We may have more players than can be accepted on teams and cuts may be required.  Letting us know your intentions is the best way to reserve your spot.

Can I attend even if I didn't fill out the form?

Yes, if you did not fill out the form to reserve your tryout spot, you can still attend the tryouts...  But you will need to wait in an extra line to complete the walk-in process.  It will be more efficient if you fill out the form the night before your scheduled tryout.

Will everybody make a team, or will there be cuts?

Placement on teams is not guaranteed for the high-school ages.  Depending on the number of registrations at each grade/gender group, we may not be able to accomodate all players.  We will consider several factors if cuts are required:  time of registration, appropriate skill for the designated level, and commitment level.  If sufficient numbers of players register, we will not need to cut...  so spread the word.

What happens if I am cut after I register?

Your best way to to assure placement on a team is to register early.  That said, it is still possible that you will not make a team.  High school aged soccer is significantly more competitive than younger ages.  If we determine that you cannot be placed on a team, you will receive a full refund.

Am I eligible if I play for a club?

Players are permitted to join Malden teams if they are also on club rosters.  However, coaches have discretion to select players based on their commitment to practice and play with the Malden team.  Club league and Middlesex high school schedules both normally have games on Sundays, and conflicts are likely.

Are girls permitted to play on boys teams?

Yes, girls are permitted to be rostered on boys teams.

What teams do you expect this year?

It is impossible to accurately predict how many teams in each cohort we will support this spring.  It depends entirely on how many players register before our deadlines.  That said, we are preparing for the following rosters:

  • Boys Grade 11+:  2 or 3 D1 teams (MTOC does not support D2 at this grade-level)

  • Girls Grade 11+: 1 D1 team

  • Boys Grade 9-10:  1 D1 team + 2 or 3 D2 teams

  • Girls Grade 9-10: 1 or 2 D2 teams
