Spring 2022

March 25, 2022

Dear Malden Youth Soccer Families,

Welcome to Spring Soccer!

We have a lot of important updates to share as we prepare for the season.

This spring, we will have 46 teams serving athletes between the ages of 4 and 20.  We will have about 600 players on our fields, which is almost a return to our pre-covid numbers.  Please join me in thanking our wonderful volunteer coaches and board members who volunteer their time to support this fun and healthy outlet for so many kids in our community.

Start Dates

Most travel teams have already started preseason practices. We cannot use grass fields until April 1 due to wet conditions, so some teams may not start practice until then. Travel games for Grades 3-8 start April 9. For Intown Soccer – Prek-2nd grade, the season officially starts on April 9 and 10. High school aged teams start April 24.

For travel teams (grade 3-12+), if you have not heard from your coaches yet, please let us know.

For Intown (PreK-Grade 2), you should expect to hear about your team placement about a week before the season starts.

Intown Updates (Grades PreK thru 2)

Our program for the little ones (PreK-K) has exploded with growth.  We will be expanding to a third session on Saturday mornings to accommodate all the new players.

Our grade 1-2 program is also as full as can be!

Here’s how this works…  Malden Youth Soccer is a community-run organization.  The coaches and board members are unpaid volunteers.  We are parents, friends, and family members who have discovered immeasurable joy in helping kids discover this beautiful game.  Many of our coaches begin their soccer career as coaches in the intown age groups.  We learn the game and how to coach it along with our young loved ones.  We have been facilitating this cycle for many decades now, and we hope this invaluable system continues in Malden.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE step forward to see how you can help.  Without help from people like you, we would not be able to continue…  so, thank you in advance.

We have many resources to support new coaches who start the journey.  One excellent option is the Mass Youth Soccer 7v7 training session we are hosting on April 2.  There is a mandatory online component of this training on March 30 for attendees.  Please contact Kenny Antonucci before then, and he will point you in the right direction.

It is OK if you are not able to attend this session, we could still use your coaching help.  Respond to this email or contact your age group coordinator to let us know how you can help.

Please also join me in welcoming our brand-new PreK-K age group coordinator, Donna Pierre!  If you have a child in this age group, please keep an eye out for communications from her.

It’s time for everyone to check for the right equipment.  Dick’s Sporting Goods is having a 20% off sale this weekend for all Mass Youth Soccer players.

For travel teams, you will need to use your uniform from the spring.  If you did not play in the spring, one will be provided for you by the coach.  This will include a shirt, shorts, and socks

Intown players will receive a jersey on the first day of soccer.  Socks and shorts will not be provided.

Here’s what you need:

  • Soccer shoes.  Cleats are recommended for all ages, but only required for kids on travel teams.  Cleats must be specific for Soccer.  Cleats for other sports such as softball and football will fail the safety requirements for soccer players if they have a toe cleat.

  • Soccer ball.  PreK-K should have size 3.  Grade 1-6 teams need size 4.  Grades 7 and up use size 5.

  • Shin guards.

  • Soccer socks.  Intown players will supply their own socks this season.

  • Reusable water bottle. Players are not permitted to share water

We have a stash of used cleats we can provide for those who need it.  Contact us for details.

REMEMBER:  You can also shop for fun Malden Youth Soccer SWAG at our new online store.  A small percentage of the proceeds are used to support our program.

Goalkeeper Clinic

Our Goalkeeper Clinic for Grades 3 and up starts THIS FRIDAY!!!  Keepers will be separated by age.  If you have not done so already, please contact Kenny Antonucci for details.  This is free for all players with a serious interest in the GK position.

Annual General Meeting & The Board Needs You!

Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17 at 7:00 PM.  The main objective of this meeting is to elect the board members who will serve the 2022-2023 soccer year.

The board needs to fill several positions which are not spoken for.  We have been operating under-staffed since COVID hit and are eager to fill several positions with people who can commit to our important mission.  If you are interested in learning more about what we need and how you can help, please reach out to me or any other board member.

T.O.P.S. Program Volunteer Opportunity

Malden Youth Soccer offers the TOPS soccer program to kids in our community with physical and mental disabilities.  This an enormously beneficial and rewarding program for both the players and the volunteers.  This program is strictly limited based on the number of volunteer “Buddies” we get for game-days:  Saturday 10:30-11:30 AM starting April 9.  Students aged 12 and up who volunteer can often use these hours toward school community service requirements.  Please contact our TOPS Coordinator, Tom Wyche, for questions and details.

Save the Date for the Revs - May 7

We are participating in an excellent new program this year which provides free tickets to all players in Mass Youth Soccer (our parent organization).  The May 7 game will be the New England Revolution against the Columbus Crew.  Details will be provided shortly, but for now, save the date.  We will be hosting a tailgate party and coordinating rides for those who need them.

Of course, we will continue to comply with Mass Youth Soccer’s evolving COVID policies this season.  Masks will not be required, but may be worn at your discretion.  If masks are worn, they must be the type that wraps behind the ears for safety reasons.  We expect everyone to comply with CDC and BOH guidelines with respect to infection, close contact, and symptoms.  Please see Mass Youth Soccer’s COVID link for details.

Sponsor Program

We are finally launching our sponsorship program in an effort to connect local businesses with our families.  You will hopefully see local businesses highlighted in some of our communications.  If you would like to participate as a sponsor, or know someone who might, please contact Heather Barry.

Please visit our sponsors and let them know that we sent you.
